DIRECT-CURRENT DISTRIBUTIONFROM SUB-STATIONS The organization of electrical con-ductors provided to convey directcurrent from the sub-stations to themoving trains can be described mostconveniently by beginning with thecontact, or so-called third rail. Southof Ninety-Sixth Street the averagedistance between sub-stations ap-proximates 12,000 ft., and north ofNinety-Sixth Street the average dis-tance is about 15,000 ft.
