Anatomy, physiology and hygiene for high schools . om the tissues collected by this same lymph passback through the capillary walls to the blood, just as in theexperiment (p. 126) with the egg some of the water passesinto the egg and some of the egg albumin into the blood then goes on to the veins and through them, de-prived of its food elements and filled with waste. The veins bear this blood back to the heart, whence it ispumped to the excretory organs, as the kidneys, where itgets rid of the waste products, and to the lungs and ali-mentary tract, where it takes up a new supply of food andoxygen, and so on round the body again. THE NUTRITION OF THE BODY 119 The blood which is going to the tissues filled with a supplyof oxygen and food is called arterial hlood; it is bright scar-let in color. That which is returning in the veins to the heartfrom tlie tissues is called venous hlood; it is of a dark purplecolor. This circulation of the blood can be studied in the web ofa frogs foot. If we look at this web under the microscope. Blood in capillaries in tissue. we see fine tubes dividing into still finer ones, all filled withblood. Through the larger tubes the blood comes, flowinginto the smaller. In the small tubes the flow is slow, thecorpuscles going in single file. Collecting the blood fromthe fine capillary tubes, we see small veins of blue color. The lymph. The blood flows in tubes, and thns does notget directly to the cells of the tissues, except the cells of thevessel walls. Its nutritious products are brought to the cellsby what is known as the lymph. 120 PHYSIOLOGY AND HYGIENE The lymph is a watery liquid which fills the interstices ofthe tissue among the cells and about the capillaries. The nutritious substances of the blood pass through thecapillary walls into this lymph. The lymph gives them up tothe cells which are bathed in it. At the same time the lymphcollects the waste from the cells and returns it to the blood. The process of interchange bet
