In [845 he entered the AustrianMilitary Academy of Milan. At the revolution of [848he left the Austrian army and joined the Venetian Legionof the Cacciatori delle Alpi in Venice ; served and par-ticipated at the siege and sorties till March, 1849, henhe left Venice and entered the Legion of Garibaldi inRome. I le served and participated with that legion inthe battles of April 30, 1S49, against the French; atthe battles of Palestrina and Velletri against the Nea-politan Bourbon army, and at the siege of Rome tillits fall. lb entered the U. S. Volunteers August 25, 1S64,in the Seventy-ninth New York Highlanders, andwas sent to the front in Virginia. He joined his regi-ment at Frt Hays, near Petersburg, Virginia; servedwith his company (A) up to < October 16
