Constellation of Gemini. 18th-century German depiction of the constellation of Gemini (centre), with part of the Milky Way (right). The German for Gemini, the Twins ('Zwillinge') is at top. This page is from Neuester Himmels-Atlas (1799), the star atlas by astronomers Christoph Friedrich Goldbach (1763-1811) and Franz Xaver von Zach (1754-1832). Goldbach was professor of astronomy in Moscow and a member of the Academy of Sciences in St Petersburg. This atlas, published in Weimar, was based on the 1795 reduced French edition of Flamsteed's atlas. The stars are traced in white against a black background.
