It will be noticed that the date of theplate is 1786, some eight years later than the event depicted, butin those days news traveled slowly and such a period of time mightreadily elapse before the deliberate country potter was moved touse as a subject for ceramic illustration the description of thatspectacular performance which had penetrated to his inland com-munity. As his intercourse with the outside world was exceed-ingly limited and his knowledge of high life was circumscribed,he used the females of his own social circle, with their tulip-figured. 13.
