LordKelvin, long known as Sir William Thomson, is one ofthe most eminent scientists of to-day, and to him is duein no small degree the wonderful advancement whichhas been made in the development of electricity inrecent years. He was born in Ireland in 1824, andgraduated at several colleges. From 1846 to 1852 hewas Fellow in St. Peters College, Cambridge, andsince that time his life has been devoted to the progressof physical science.
