Doc] Third Anthracite District. 101 Mine Improvements During 1889. No improvements were made during- the year 1889, except those whichwere absolutely necessary to keep up the usual production of coal. Thecoal business was not active and the market did not demand nearly asmuch as it did in the previous year, and this, perhaps, was the cause ofthe inactivity in effecting- improvements. Lehigh and Wilkes-Barre Coal Company. At the Hollenback colliery the main shaft was extended from theBaltimore to the Red Ash seam, an increased depth of 373. Its totaldepth from surface to the Red Ash seam is 950 and its sectional area is12x46. The new air-shaft mentioned in iny last report was sunk to a depth of743, having a sectional area of 12x37. They have not yet struck theRed Ash seam and it is supposed to have pinched out at that shaft is to constitute the required second opening1 for the Red Ashworkings of the Hollenback colliery.
