Statue of Yue Laou, The "Old Man of Moonlight" of Chinese poetry and legend.

According to legend, the immortal old man unites predestined Chinese couples by tying them with a silken cord during the night, after which they cannot be separated. The book in his hand is a register of all marriages, and the bag contains the red silk cords that are used to tie the feet of couples together. Neither distance nor opposition of families will prevent the marriages from happening once the silken cords have been tied.
