Atthe outbreak of the war he was in commandof the United States arsenal at St. Sigel, a Prussian refugee, had settledm St. Louis in 1858, and in May, 1861, raisedthe Union Third Missouri Infantry and be-came its colonel. Under Lyon he helpedto capture Camp Jackson, St. Louis, wlici-cGeneral Frost was drilling a small body ofvolunteer state militia.
