XV/E illustrate herewith a new rubber mixerT which has an attachment for continu-ously turning the rubber over as it passes be-tween the rolls, thereby eliminating the manuallabor necessary with the usual type of two-roll machine. This mixer also has an ad-justable apron which catches the unmixed in-gredients and carries them back to the upperpart of the rolls to be mixed with the two drawings of the machine show anend view and a side elevation, both partly insection. The machine has two horizontal rollsA and B. the first of which is the rolls is a hopper C, having a sufficient capacity to holdall of the ingredients except the rubber, for one batch. At thebottom of the hopper is a cylindrical distributor D, driven by achain E. This device distributes the powdered ingredients overthe rubber as it passes down between the rolls. The distributormay be started or stopped by operating a clutch Oliers !Mixing M.^CHI^•E. the regulator N is set to maintain a pre-determined pressure onthe piston in the cylinder L. The result is to force the pistondown, to raise the sliding roll D, and to impose an even pressureon the fabric passing over the rollers. For instance, if anyslackness occurs in the fabric while passing to the calender, theroll D raises, and the pressure on the piston causes the surplus August 1, 1914.] THE INDIA RUBBER WORLD 617 fahric to be taken up. On the other hand, if the strain on thefabric is greater than the pressure permitted by the regulator, enough air will leak past the piston to permit the roll to movedownward, relieving the tension on the fabric.
