The original scheme of applying brakesin this way was adapted from a plan in use on the GroveStreet line in Oakland, Cal., but on the Sacramentosystem several changes had to be made in order thatthe best results could be secured. The first brake installed gave considerable troublebecause the connecting chain was coupled directly tothe equalizer bar and also because the leverage on bothlight and motor wheels was the same, causing the lightwheels to lock and flatten.
