These personal emblems were designed by Leonardo da Vinci in his position as court artist in Milan They are on the theme of constancy. The top emblem has the words 'stubborn rigour' (hostinato rigore) underneath a plough. Above the words 'Desitinato Rigore' the centre emblem depicts a compass which, although set upon a continuously turning waterwheel, its needle remains fixed upon a star. The lower symbol shows a candle in a lantern that remains constantly alight despite the winds.
