. Athletic principles and activities . The school is inter-ested in athletics because of their exceptional value in the developmentof group consciousness, of educational leadership, of wholesome playtraditions, as well as in their value in the promotion of health and ofgood recreative habits. The modern athletic field is the laboratory in which those preceptsregarding fair play, honesty, unselfishness and the other social ormoral virtues are put to a test. Instead of being heard, they are are lived under the stress of competition. They are practicedunder the wise guidance of trained teachers until they form a firmtexture of good habits that should make the athlete a better man orwoman. What we now need is a public awakening to the fact thatevery boy and girl should daily have a chance to visit such a playlaboratory, and that no school should be considered complete withoutan adequate athletic field in charge of highly trained teachers.
