A few more yards of ?warp can be sized and dried if this extra steam is used, but it isnot economical to gain even a warp in two or three days at theexpense of greater cost. The inside of the cylinder is fitted withdrip pans, which catch the condensed steam and convey it to theoutlet. There are generally three of these pans fixed at equaldistances apart, and extend-ing the full width of thecylinder. They have aslight incline, and pipes inthe form of tlie letter Srunning from the lower endconvey the water to theoutlet. (See Fig. 32.) Vacuum Valve. The cylinders are also fitted witha vacuum valve, and fre-quently the slasher tenderhas serious trouble byneglecting it. Sometimesthis valve becomes fouled, and the cylinder collapses;for if the valve does notallow air to enter thecylinder after the steam is shut off, a vacuum is formed andthe thin copper sheeting is not capable of resisting the 45 38 WARP PREPARATIOK. 5^
