The maid of Saragossa, Siege of Zaragoza, Spain, 1808
From an original engraving Blackie's Comprehensive History of England 1896. The maid of Saragossa was said to be Spain's Joan of Arc. Allegedly a serving girl who arrived to find all on the battery killed by the French & pushed aside their bodies & began firing the cannon herself with such accuracy that she rallied her fellow countrymen to renewed fighting when all was seemingly lost.
