Dudley Carleton, 1st Viscount Dorchester, was a Member of Parliament from 1604 - 1611 and successively served as a diplomat in: Venice (1610); the United Provinces (1616); and France (1625). He also acted as an agent for English art collectors, buying old master paintings. In 1628, he was recalled to England, made a Viscount and appointed Secretary of State. The role of Secretary of State had previously been titled King’s Clerk, King’s Secretary or Principal Secretary. However, by the time of the early 1600s, a Secretary of State advised the monarch and was a powerful office. As a minister, he supported George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628), a favourite of both King James I of England and VI of Scotland and of his son, King Charles I, who ascended the throne in 1625. Carleton died at Westminster in 1632. He was buried in Westminster Abbey where a translation of part of the Latin inscription on his large monument reads: “… he bequeathed a grievous sorrow to his king, to the kingdom and to all good men”. Square detail of engraving by English engraver and artist John Sturt (1658-1730), after a portrait by Michiel Jansz. van Miereveldt (1567 - 1641). The engraving was published in 1713. Sturt is best known for his illustrations of John Bunyan's 'Pilgrim's Progress'. Michiel Jansz. van Miereveldt (or Miereveld or Mierevelt) was born in Delft and employed as a portrait painter at the Stadholder’s court in The Hague.
