In one of these trials, after some new adjustment ofthe truck, conditions showing very little improvement, our engineer of surface lines suggested that possiblythe trouble might be caused by the condition of thetangent track just ahead of the switch, the mate-siderail being low. But, inasmuch as all cars were broughtto a full stop before entering the switch, the switchmate and guard rails themselves being level, this lowspot, it was thought, could not have much bearing onthe case. After some further adjustment of the truckwithout improving conditions, examination of the lowspot referred to showed that it corresponded to thelength of truck base. The track was leveled and derail-ments ceased entirely. It was reasoned that, on account of this low spot, the. It would be of interest to know if the leveling ofthe track in the first place would have been sufficientto have prevented the derailments. Truck Angularity on Curves A correspondent in Kansas City, Mo., calls attentionto a useful short-cut method for finding the angle whicha truck makes with the car body when the car is on acurve. He states that he has found the practice inmany drafting rooms to be to lay out on a curve all of the lines shown in thei accompanying dia- gram in order to findthe angle CBD. HereAB is the radius ofcurvature and DB isone-half the distancebetween truck cen-ters. From the dia-gram it is evidentthat triangle CBD issimilar to triangleBAD and
