Larch wood growth rings. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cross-section through larch tree wood (Larix decidua) showing the annual growth rings. During Autumn and Winter cell growth slows to a halt producing very small, compressed cells shown here as yellow bands. During the Spring and Summer cell growth is rapid producing large, open cells. An annual ring comprises of both fast and slow growth. Magnification x240 (x60 at 10cm wide).
