This gate is now the c^ity prison, both for delatorsand criminals, with a large and high pitchedroom over the gateway, and others in the way up to them is through a grated cage inthe gate, level with the street, where the prisoners,who are not more closely confined, may discoursewith passengers, receive their alms, and warnthem (by their distress) to manage their libertyand proj)erty to the best advantage, as well as tothank God for whatever share of those blessingshe has bestowed on them. ^^ Archbishop Sudbury is recorded as builder ofthis gate, and of the wall called the long wall
