In most gardens, though it does not appear to beneeded everywhere, care must be taken that the youngleaves do not suffer from late frosts. In the neigh-bourhood of London, and for some way to the southof that latitude, the young leafy growths need to beprotected by a few Fir boughs, or something that willbreak the frost without so closely covering theLilies as to draw and weaken them. The white trumpetflowers, borne one or two on a stem in the typeplant, but more numerously in the stronger kinds,have yellow anthers that help to give the flower anappearance of great purity, while its fine build givesan impression of consummate beauty of Lily form. An immense quantity are grown in Japan for ex-portation, so that the moderate price at which itmay be bought is an encouragement to free plant-ing.
