The German, Austrian, and Turkish distinctive mark is the well-known German cross on a white ground. The earlier Turkishmachines, however, bore a white star and crescent on a red addition to the German cross, the Austrian machines often bearthe national white and red stripes painted on the extremitiesof the wings. As well as the national emblems, the machinesusually carry a number and class mark to indicate the service uponwhich they are engaged. Experiments are being made to obtain paint colours that makean aercjplane on the ground as invisible as possil)le from an aeroplaneoverhead.
