Church of Transfiguration of Our Saviour in Eliyah Street (1374) is one of Novgorod's most celebrated monuments. The church is very typical to 14th and 15th century Novgorodian architecture (eight-slope roof replaced the three-pitched one in the 16th century), however its rich decoration differes from restrained Novgorodian style. Facades are decorated differently, depending on their importance. Especially lavish is decor of the main, southern facade. Decoration of the drum in its regular pattern and strict symmetry seems to embody imperishable of the heavenly as contrasted to the transience of the earthly. However, the charm of the church is not due to its individual forms, but rather due to harmonious fusion of all its components. In 1378 boyar Vasily Danilovich and people of Eliyah Street commissioned painting of the church, and it was frescoed by outstanding master Theophanes the Greek. This Byzantine Greek artist was one of the greatest icon painters, or iconographers, of Muscovite Russia, and was noted as the teacher and mentor of the great Andrei Rublev. Theophanes was described by the Muscovites as "learned in philosophy", which was reflection on his broad education and erudition.
