One of them was chargedwith young, and a figure of one of the larvae extractedfrom the incubatory pouch is represented in the left-hand figure of the woodcut upon p. 177. It is aremarkable fact, observes the author in introductoryremarks on the genus, that in the young the organsgenerally bear a closer resemblance to those of P. caru-leata than to those of their own parent species. Weare now able to account for this remarkable fact, fromhaving learned that P. ccsruleata, which we then con-sidered as a distinct species in a fully developed con-dition, is only a full-grown larva of the precedingspecies. Our knowledge of the present species must of coursebe considered as imperfect until its legitimate male isdiscovered. ANCEUS HALIDAII. ISOPODA. ABERRANTIA. 203 ANCEUS HALIDAII. Specific character. Male, with the cephalon nearly square, the lateralanterior angles truncated for the insertion of the antennse, middle of the foremargin produced into three broad divisions, of which the central is slightlyporrected ; margin finely serrated ; antero-dorsal surface of cephalon verybroadly concave ; mandibles small, scarcely half the length of the cephalon, entire on the outer margin ; second pair of gnathopoda composed of five broadjoints. Male esserted organ rather short and thick; pereiopoda with smallspines on the terminal joints. Female, with the outer gnathopoda five-jointed, narrower than in themale; inner gnathopoda wanting ? Length, one quarter of an inch. Anceus formica? Hesse, M^m. fltrang. Acad. Sci. t. xviii. p. 39, pi. 5, 6, 7. This species is at once distinguished from A. maocil-laris by the very different structure and small size ofthe mandibles and foot-jaws in the males, and b
