Dennis Gabor. Historical portrait of the British- Hungarian physicist Dennis Gabor (1900-1979). Gabor worked in Germany, leaving for Britain when Hitler rose to power. From 1947-8 he worked on improving the resolution of electron microscopy. He then took the technique he had developed, using it to record a three-dimensional (3-D) image of an object by scanning it with visible light. He had invented holography. The later development of the laser would greatly improve the quality of the holographs. Gabor received the 1971 Nobel Prize for Physics.
