Marble statuette of Persephone wearing a high polos (crown) and holding a pomegranate flower About 250-300 BC Pomegranates were essential to the cult of Persephone, as she had eaten seeds from the fruit while she was in the Underworld. Upon eating this meal of the dead, she had to remain for three months of each year with Hades (Pluton). The polos may have indicated divinity. The drapery is paralleled on some of the terracotta's found in the sanctuary.
