They seemto have been punched more or less where the owner wishedto put them, and the blank spaces have been filled upsubsequently with other touches and of other years. Many of the earlier touches are ofncially dated, and maybe said to cover, with a few intervals, the time from 1673to 1824. It seems that the usual object of ordering a touchto be dated was that it might be known who were theoffenders, the majority of touches being undated. Occa-sionally, however, nev/ touches were
