Who thinks of the gray old fortress-prisons, or of the blood-stained Mercato ?Who could compare these voluptuous images of pleasure on which the roses breathe theirperfume, with the statue of the youthful Hohenstaufen in the grim Carmelite church, halfhidden by choking clouds of priestly incense ? To breathe and live here, is to breatheairs of Paradise and to exist in the present alone.
