Milky Way over Yamdrok Lake. Yamdrok Lake is one of the three largest sacred lakes in Tibet, China. It is 4441 metres above sea level. The Milky Way (seen here from the constellations Scorpius to Sagittarius) is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky. On the horizon many kilometres away at centre is the mountain Noijin Kangsang (7191 metres). Also visible on the horizon is a green band of airglow, a phenomenon where a planetary atmosphere emits a faint glow when atoms are excited by sunlight. Photographed on 2 October 2015.
