Baccaurea ramiflora (Burmese grape) is a slow growing evergreen tree in the Euphorbiaceae family, growing to 25 m, with a spreading crown and thin bark. Lotkon is cultivated in many Asian countries like India, Malaysia, Vietnam and China and then Bangladesh. The fruit is rich in Vitamin-C and minerals. It has also good demand in different countries including the Middle East. In Bangladesh once seen as a jungle fruit growing naturally, lotkon now sees commercial cultivation by hundreds of farmers. It is highly nutritious fruit is now a profitable venture for many farmers in Belabo and Narsingdi upazilas under the district. The yield of the sour juicy fruit, locally known as bubi, crossed 150 tonnes in Gouripur this year, now lotkon is being cultivated in 111 hectares of land including 17 orchards -- 15 in Narsingdi and two in Maymanshing upazila. Depending on quality, prices of a mound of lotkon in the local market vary from 23 USD to 47 USD.
