The pipes slatted about furious in mid air and the steam was thrown about in every direction. This was called "the battle of the serpents," or some such name, and as lighted up by the twenty projectors had a dazzling effect. Another effect was obtained by discharg- ing an aerial bomb high in the sky, then turning the searchlights up on it till the smoke cloud had disappeared.
