Built 1825-1830 on Museum Island, Mitte, Berlin The two sculptures at the entrance are The Lion Fighter, an 1858 bronze equestrian statue by Albert Wolff, and The Fighting Amazon 1842 by sculptor August Kiss The Dioscuri sculptures (1826-8) on the roof of the museum by sculptor Christian Friedrich Tieck are the Greek youths, Castor and Pollux. The twins, of divine and human origin, are shown as horse tamers and as heavenly figures both carry a star over their heads. In front of the museum is the 1828 Granitschale, a 70 ton bowl which was carved out of single slab of granite. It was commissioned by King Friedrich Wilhelm III and was fashioned after Nero's Golden House bowl which is located at the Vatican Museum in Rome.
