Museo di Storia Naturale Giancarlo Ligabue (Natural history museum) with exhibits of botany and zoology, plus a library & workshops on the Grand Canal in Venice in the Veneto region of northern Italy. Dating from the early 13th century, the grey Fondaco dei Turchi is one of the earliest surviving palaces. From 1621 until 1838, the Fondaco dei Turchi was used by Turkish traders/ merchants who set up a warehouse (fondaco) with high porticos (arches) designed for boats to enter, loading and unloading of goods or merchandise from other trading nations. However, by the early 19th century, the building was in such a bad state of repair that a campaign was launched to rebuild it in its original 13th-century style. Unfortunately, the resulting restoration was so badly planned and the present building is a mere shadow of its former self. Although there’s barely an original brick left in Fondaco dei Turchi. Its double loggia, ( 1st and 2nd floors) the roofline of triangles, and distinctive arches reflect the architectural influence of the Byzantine world.
