They formed a suitable form of sepulture, fulfilling all theconditions of sanitation, and, at the same time, affording a safe and accep-table hiding-place for the early Christians during the fierce persecutions towhich they were subjected. The catacombs were of immense extent,forming a series of galleries, leading from each other, and it was to these,. 2ii^ probably, those portions which were disused,that the early Christians retreated for inscriptions are on the walls, copies ofwhi( h are here engraved.
