DEP' AGRICULTURE, I Office of County Correspondent, ) Minnesota City, Minn., Aug. 17. Your circular with the Aitkin Plums received, and the circular is no exaggeration. This fruit will speak for itself anywhere. I tested part of them for cooking, as their real value depends upon this The Aitkin Plum is without that ascerbitv or acrid quality- peculiar to nearly all native Plums. The skin is not tough and leathery like most wild Plums, and partly disappears in" cooking. In my opinion the Aitkin has no rival in its season and must become a valuable addition to our list, serving to more surely prolong the fruit season than if it were a late variety. " ' "o. M. Lord. .... , . Cedar Rapids, Iowa, August 12. Specimens of the Aitkin Plums measured 5 inches m circumference one way and 4>y2 the other, which is a verv great size for a native. The quality seems to be very fair. Its size and color ought to make it a first-class variety. It is the earliest of alf the American plums so far as I know, and I have a large collection of them. The flesh and pit indicate an ancestral blood of prehistoric cultivation. I congratulate vou on so valuable a find in our native Plums, that are so rapidly coming to the front in our Prairie States. What the Concord ^rape has done n laying the foundation for successful grape culture, such Plums as yours will do for the Plum culture in the near future. & Dr. A. B. Dennis, Horticulturist.
