Ms Carole Enwistle facing redundancy as the North West Sound Archive is no longer able to continue as a going concern and on the 26 November, 2014, the NWSA Council made the difficult decision to wind up the organisation in early 2015. Arrangements are being made to transfer the collections to the appropriate local authority archive service where they will be preserved in controlled climatic conditions and hopefully will, in due course be made available for access by the public.
The North West Sound Archive was founded in 1979. Its purpose is to record, collect and preserve sound recordings relevant to life in the North West of England. After several homes in Manchester, the archive moved to Clitheroe in 1982. The Archive contains over 110,000 sound recorded items and tonnes of 78-rpm gramophone records ranging from George Formby to the Halle Orchestra. There are internationally important collections including the survey of English dialect and solidarity speeches from the dockyards of Poland. It is the largest collection of sound recordings outside London. Currently the Archive holds over 140,000 recordings relating to all aspects of north west life including oral history recordings, local radio programmes, sounds of the region, music and dialect poetry - in fact anything that can be recorded. The Sound Archive undertook its own recording programme as well as assisting groups who wish to make their own recordings. It offered a safe storage environment for the preservation of the region's sound collections.
