After leaving school he wasapprenticed to a machinist, and became so ]irof]cient in his chosencalling that on completing his term he secured employment inthe United States Arsenal at Springfieid, where he labored ef-ficiently until he removed to Boston to take employment in thelocomotive works. About 1875 he located in New York city andengaged in the manufacture of l)ook backing, stamping and trim-ming machinery, and for twenty-six years past has been estab-. His shops areunsnii^assed for their equipment for their ]3urpose, much of themachinery being of Mr. Elliss own invention. His talent formachinery invention was evidenced in his early youth, and whenonly seventeen years old he ]nodueed an entirely practicableside-hill plow, while ainouii, his more recent inventions is a ])otatohar\-ester which has found wide use. Mr. F]llis married, in Xew Vork, Miss Elizabeth AIcAftrey,of Brattleboro, Vermont, and of this marriage were bom threechildren: John residing in St. Louis, Missouri; Elizabeth,who is the wife of Cornelius W. Bogart, residing in New York;and Anna j\!aria, wlio is the wife of Charles W. Dickerson. Themother of these children having died, Mr. Ellis married (second)Miss Agnes AVheatley, a native of Brooklyn, New York. Thereare no children of this maiiiage. ^Ir. a
