On a continuous current dynamo there is a commutatorwhich consists of a number of copper bars insulated fromeach other and mounted in the form of a cylinder throughwhich the insulated shaft passes, the number of bars cor-respond to the number of coils in the armature to whichthey are also attached. The Collecting Brushes consist of two copper gauzebrushes or carbon blocks which are in contact with thecommutator, set opposite one another on the commutator;when the dynamo is in motion the segments of the com-mutator pass in rapid succession under the brushes whichcollect the current generated in the machine and conductit from the dynamo by wire connections attached to thebrushes. The commutator converts the alternating currentset up by the action of rotating the insulated conductorin the magnetic field, into a continuous 90 ELECTRO-PHYSICS The current which is generated in the armature passesinto the external circuit and also induces a current in thecoil around the electro-magnet rendering it electro-magneticwhen the dynamo is in motion. There are two forms of dynamo winding, the serieswound and the shunt wound dynamo. In the series wound machine the current passes fromone brush through the field magnet coil, then throughthe external circuit back to the other brush. Fig. 29 Fig. 30
