An Egyptian crocodile sphinx, Graeco-Roman period, 3rd/2nd century BC Bronze with green patina. Top of a staff. Shaped like a sphinx with the head of a human or a falcon and the body of a resting crocodile, the head with an opening for a crown or a headdress. The face slightly worn by polishing. Tapered socket with simple line decoration. Height cm. Crocodile sphinxes are known from the royal temple of Amenophis III as well as in the temple of Serapis in the Ptolemaic harbour town Berenike.
