PHYSIOGRAPHY 155 During this same period the glaciers of the Alps and othermountains were much more extensive than now, extending fardown the mountain valleys. These facts are known by thedeposits of drift that the ice left, by the boulders and pebbles. that the glacier moved, and by the scratches that were made onthe rock as the ice dragged these fragments along. In Europe, as in North America, the ice cap was over amile thick; and when it slowly moved over the surfaceit swept away the soil that had accumulated, and groundthe rock fragments to bits. These bits of rock it depos-ited elsewhere as drift, so that, while the bed rock wasleft bare in some places, in others it was covered witha deep glacial soil containing boulders and pebbles.
