The founders of this association built not only wisely, but withbeneficial results to the street railway systems of this country farbeyond their realization. To the foresight and in Icfatigable energy of H. H. Littell, Longstreet and Thomas Lowry. from whose Littell begin-ning the Association has passed through the Long-street ofprogress without Lowr-yng its usefulness, belong the credit ofthe present efficiency and the high state of perfection of thestreet railway systems of this country, and which the entireworld has adopted as its G W. 1:.\LM1I(JFI-. The growth of the Association has been marvelous; the goodit has accomplished, inestimable. It doubtless represents throughits membership a greater combined capital than any organiza-tion or association in the world, and through its channels hasdisseminated information resulting in the establishment through-out civilized communities, of electric railway systems where noother service could be maintained, and in supplanting animaltraction with its resultant saving in time. It has been the means of saving millions of dollars to many in-vestors in street railway properties by information procuredfrom papers and discussions at our annual meetings, particularlyat a time when much doubt was involved as to the best systemto adopt in changing from animal to mechanical traction.
