While still a child, he used to pick uppieces of charcoal from the floor with his toes, andmade rough sketches on the wall, which evinced somuch promise that he received some local in-struction. By the help of the municipality ofLille, he was sent to Iaris, studied under Lethierearid Gerard, and for a time received a pension. Hodied in Paris in 1856.
