Arthur's Stone, Dorstone - Neolithic Burial Tomb

Arthur's Stone in Dorstone, Herefordshire. This is a Neolithic burial chamber that would once have been covered by a mound of earth. It is thought to be a part of a group of such pre-historic monuments stretching across the Cotswold and Severn area. The stone is in a prominent position, pointing towards The Skirrid, and providing a view of the whole range of the Black Mountains as well as the Golden Valley in the foreground. The giant capstone, thought to weigh some 25 tonnes, has now broken in to two halves. There is a school of thought that suggests that this particular stone was the inspiration for the scene involving the death of Aslan the lion in CS Lewis's book 'The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe.'
