Kangaroo, early illustration. This is a hand-coloured lithograph from circa 1790, that was derived from a 1772 painting by George Stubbs (1724-1806) commissioned by Sir Joseph Banks (1743â1820) following his voyage of discovery with Captain James Cook to the Pacific (1768â71). Kangaroos were observed by Europeans for the first time on this voyage when landing in Australia (New Holland) in 1770. The painting by Stubbs was titled 'The Kongouro from New Holland', and was based on samples of kangaroos brought back from the voyage. Errors include misrepresenting the hind feet, the forearms being too small, and making the ears too large.
