A hand-book of Louisiana, giving general and agricultural features . or Gulf of Mexico, and isreadily accessible to the wharves of New Orleans andRaton Rouge. Millions of dollars have been recentlyinvested in these timber resources, and the sawmills andplaning machines of the North, like the cotton factories, are gradually moving South for large profits. Thegreatest timber wealth of this State is in its immenseareas of long and short-leaf pine, and its unparalleledforests of cypress. While other Southern States sharewith us the claims for superiority, in both quality andquantity of the former, of the latter we stand withouta rival, in both the immense quantity available and theexcellent quality of the lumber made therefrom. Onlya few years ago and our cypress lumber was but littleknown and appreciated; to-day it ranks with other varie-ties of timber in quantity, and surpasses all other inq\iality. The Cypress Lumber Manufacturing Associa-tion, which meets monthly in New Orleans, representsan output of over 300,000,000 feet of finished lumber peryear. 42.
