Blue sky white clouds view across Castle Square to the red bricks Royal Castle, Old Town, Warsaw, Poland

The Royal Castle (Zamek Krolewski) formerly served as the official residency of the Polish monarchs, from the 16th century until the partitions of Poland in the late 18th and 19th centuries. In the Middle Ages, it was the seat of the Dukes of Masovia, and since 1596, when Poland's capital moved from Krakow to the more central location of Warsaw, the seat of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was badly damaged in the German Invasion of Poland in 1939 and almost completely destroyed, with most buildings in the Old Town, following the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. The castle was reconstructed 1971-1984.
