Bushby),who raised a subscription for the purpose, the two piecesof ordnance now to be found in the grounds weresecured in the summer of 1906. Although circumscribedin area, it is seldom one meets with a more magnificentoutlook, the landscape extending across the marshes to asfar distant as Folkestone and Dover, and the Kentish hillson the eastward; while the Fairlight Downs to the west-ward stand out very prominently. Immediately facing theBattery is Rye Bay, a most interesting spectacle beingafforded in the passing 70 guide to rye The Gateways. one time there were three gatesin the walls which enclosed thetown, and one postern, two ofthe former being sufficiently highand wide to admit of horses andcarriages. The Strandgate, leading out of the town to thesouth-west, communicated, as itsname implies, with the Strand,where the vessels lay to unloadtheir cargoes. This gate was in aruinous state for many years, having only half the archremaining, wliich was pulled down about the year the centre of the arch was a rude stone coat of arms,representing three sterns of vessels joined to three demi-lions at their heads, being the Cinque Ports Arms. Thiswas preserved and placed in the adjoining wall, at thebottom of Mermaid Street, where it still remains, amemento of bygone days.
