The two batteries had hardly begunto range when the Russian batteries, who had the rangealready, turned on them and reduced them to silencewithin twenty minutes. Several times during the daythese two batteries pluckily tried to resume the contest,but on each occasion they were similarly silenced in afew minutes by the superior accuracy and command ofthe entrenched Russian batteries, which at 5500 yardswere firing well within their own shrapnel range,.
