The pedes-tal is triangular inshape, its columnar INDUSTRIAL ART. 97 ornamentation—the up-per and lower members.—having all the sim-plicity and severity ofEgyptian outlines. Thedecoration of the basehas a certain orientalismin the arransfement ofthe pyramidal designs,and the lotus—the sacredrtower of the Nile — isworked in as an acces-sory to the detail. There is something. peculiarly suggestive andappropriate in choosingfor the ornamentation ofa clock—a mechanicalapparatus that recordsthe flight of time—em-blems and figures takenfrom that country whosevery existence to-day isa constant reminder ofthe centuries gone by,whose monuments standas silent but sublime rec-cords of the glory of past Greek Vase: Mitchell, l\incc &> lYew York.
