The yearfollowing he was Assistant Professor of Modern Lan-guages at the Uni\ersity of Kansas. In 1890 hewas called to the LIniversity of Michigan, where hehas held the following positions successively : Instruc-tor in German, 1890-1S92, 1893-1895 ; AssistantProfessor of German, 1S95-1900 ; Acting Professorof German, 1900-1902 ; Professor of the GermanLanguage and Literature since 1902. During hisfirst two years at Ann Arbor he pursued graduatestudies in connection with his teaching and receivedthe degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the LIni-versity in 1892. The year 1892-1893 was spent instudies at the LTniversity of Berlin. He is a memberof the Modern Language
