After the loss of Roye the German retreat con-tinued apace to the center of the Hindenburg line,the next stopping place. So rapid was the Alliedadvance that 50 villages were liberated in two days,but they were only the shadows of towns. In everyone the enemy had wreaked his spiteful wrath uponthe homes of the poor and the rich alike with fire.
